It all starts with an idea…

The idea to create our first show May fly/ may not was sparked by reading a bedtime story to my daughters “Goodnight stories for Rebel Girls” 100 stories about extraordinary women from the past and present- illustrated by 60 female artists from all around the world!

There was one story that excited my eldest daughter the most- the story of Lilian Bland- the first woman in the world to design, build and fly her own airplane!

She wasn’t like other women of her time- she wore trousers, she liked to hunt and fish and she had a dream of flying a plane. It was only after she was refused the opportunity to fly a plane (based on the fact she was a woman) that she decided she would build her own one instead! And in August 1910 she successful built a biplane that could fly a very short distance.

She called her plane “May Fly”- It may fly or it may not.

History dictates which heroes we remember- and Lilian Bland is one incredible person who very few people know about. So we decided to take her story and devise a show based on her dream to build a flyable plane and hopefully then inspire other people to be creative, or to be inventors or engineers OR to just go boldly where no one else has gone before… (even when someone says you can’t)
